Winery \u2013 Facilities<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Agricultural Cooperative\u2019s privately-owned winery is located in Myrina, Limnos, on an area of 10,000 m2 near Agios Nikolaos Port.<\/p>\n

Our winery facilities covering a total surface area of 3,500 m2 reflect the historical development of wine-making in Greece from the mid-20th century to the present day. The reinforced concrete tanks used in the construction of the winery up to the end of the 1980s have now been replaced by modern stainless steel tanks.<\/p>\n

Concrete tanks are no longer used since the total capacity of the stainless steel tanks (35,000 HL) is sufficient for current production volumes, and yet they remain a key structural element of the building.<\/p>\n

Everything made at the winery is bottled and packaged on site using our very own state-of-the-art machinery. The Cooperative of Limnos is certified under the ISO 22000:2005 international food safety standard. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The Vineyards\n<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Vineyards carefully tended by growers who are members of the Cooperative cover more than 350 hectares across the entire island while the low yield of 7000 kg means that the grapes are of the utmost quality. Vineyards have bush (goblet) trellis system and the vines are no more than 40-50 cm tall.<\/p>

The intensity of flavour and the characteristics that emerge during wine-making are a result of the island\u2019s volcanic soil which is deep and poor, located over limestone rocks and well drained, but also as a result of the systematic and careful tending of the vineyards by growers throughout the year. From 1997 onwards organic farming programmes have been implemented at selected vineyards to allow alternative farming methods to develop focused on environmental protection and on protecting varieties that thrive on the island.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Muscat of Alexandria variety is almost exclusively cultivated only on Limnos, generating exceptional results. It remains the top variety for hundreds of the island\u2019s vine growers. While some vines of this variety may be grown in the rest of Greece, only Limnos has been given protected designation of origin (PDO) appellation, both for its sweet (Muscat Limnos, 1971) and for dry, semi-dry and semi-sweet wines (Limnos, 1982). This is one of the few varieties that can be used in three ways (for table grapes, wine-making and raisins).<\/p>\n

Possibly originating from North Africa, the Muscat of Alexandria variety was first cultivated on Limnos at the start of the 20th century. It soon acclimatised perfectly to the island of Limnos, producing wonderful sweet and dry aromatic white wines. The island\u2019s volcanic soils are the ideal environment for revealing the variety\u2019s charms, resulting in exceptional PDO wines. Although it is similar the Muscat white variety, it produces wines of a different character, with a more distinctive flavour, but also with a more robust after-taste and rich body.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t

Limnio or Kalambaki<\/em><\/strong>, as the variety is also widely-known on the island, is a grape variety that undoubtedly demonstrates the richness that modern Greek wines have to offer the world of wine today. It is a grape referred to by numerous ancient Greek writers such as Homer, Hesiod and Julius Pollux, which increases its uniqueness. Although little grown nowadays in its original birthplace, in its natural habitat this variety continues to retain its special features, producing exceptional wines. Since 2011 wines made from it have been accorded a protected designation of origin appellation under the name \u201cLimnos\u201d.<\/p>\n

Wines made with the Limnio variety have an interesting, crisp flavour, a colour of average depth, elegant aromas stimulating both the nose and mouth, dominated by tones of fresh herbs and red fruits of the forest. When tasted they have average to high acidity, crisp tannins and alcohol proof of around 12.5-13%. Due to island\u2019s soil and climate conditions, the variety generates different characteristics compared to other areas where in which it is cultivated.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
