History of the Cooperative

Foundation

In 1937, the Agricultural Cooperative of Limnos was founded by producers of the island. Its main activity at that time was the collection and ginning of the well-known cotton produced in Limnos.

Subsequently, and due to the increased outward migration of the Lemnians, cotton cultivation was gradually abandoned and the Agricultural Cooperative turned to winemaking.

Production of dry and sweet wines of Limnos.

Having as raw materials the red variety of Limnos, one of the oldest varieties in the world, which has been preserved unchanged on the island, and the white variety of Muscat of Alexandria, which had come to Limnos already in the 1970s and was cultivated tentatively by some producers, the Cooperative started the production of the now well-known dry and sweet wines of Limnos.

The Agricultural Cooperative of Limnos - The Union

The Association is the natural and legal continuation of the Union of Agricultural Cooperatives of Limnos, under the auspices of which all the agricultural cooperatives of Limnos were active until 2012. In 2012, with the law 4015/11, the well-known Union, after merging with many other cooperatives on the island, was transformed into a primary cooperative in its current form.
